Abstract
Oxidative stress caused by excessive free radicals plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of various degenerative diseases, including cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular disorders. The Moringaceae family, which includes Moringa oleifera, M. peregrina, M. concanensis, and M. stenopetala, is recognized as a natural source of antioxidants rich in phenolic and flavonoid compounds. This study aimed to integrate scientific evidence from multiple Moringaceae species through in vitro studies to validate antioxidant activity, assess toxicity safety, and confirm their therapeutic potential. A systematic literature review was conducted on selected publications from 2020 to 2025. The in vitro methods employed included measurements of Total Phenolic Content (TPC) and Total Flavonoid Content (TFC), DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging assays, and UHPLC-HRMS for bioactive compound identification. The results indicated that Moringa stenopetala exhibited the highest antioxidant activity, with IC₅₀ values of 44.00 mg/mL and 0.159 ± 0.0014 mg/mL, which were lower than those of Moringa oleifera, indicating stronger free radical scavenging capacity. Overall, plants from the Moringaceae family were found to be safe and effective natural antioxidants, with in vitro antioxidant activity positively correlated with high levels of phenolic and flavonoid compounds, supporting their potential as promising candidates for herbal supplement development.
